Gregg Mervis named International Soap Box Derby Board chairman - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Gregg Mervis, who has served as chief executive officer and president of Akron-Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau for the past five years, has been named chairman of the International Soap Box Derby board.

Mervis replaces Kevin Thomas, vice president of AAA Akron Auto Club. Thomas will retain his board seat.

The board enacted the changes at its annual meeting this month. The 14-member governing body includes four officers and manages the non-profit organization.

Other changes: Mark Mroczynski, executive director, Transmission Reliability Enhancement Projects for FirstEnergy, will become vice chairman. And Danyelle Sweitzer, human resource director for GPD Group, will become secretary.

New members elected:

* Kevin Griffin of Strongsville. Griffin is vice president of Marketing Strategy and Public Relations for Cleveland-based The Adcom Group.

* Robert Knapp of Akron. Knapp is the retired senior vice president of Strategic Integration for Signet Jewelers.

* Guy Pipitone of Akron. Pipitone is the retired senior vice president of FirstEnergy.

The board also said Pat Roberts, Jason Dodson and Scott Lazarus will be stepping down, and derby volunteer Bobby Nickoli was added as an honorary board member.

The board also is composed of the following:

* Carole Berry, administrative manager at the University of New Hampshire;

* Treasurer Alan Brubaker, Summit County Engineer;

* Michael Callahan, senior partner of Callahan, Greeven, Riley & Sinn, L.L.C.;

* Bill Lowery, retired president, Annaco;

* Chris Ludle, deputy director of public service, city of Akron;

* Dominic Rizzo, vice president and general sales manager at Rubber City Radio Group;

* Dr. Don Visco, dean of the College of Engineering and professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, University of Akron.

The derby's roots date to 1934 in Dayton. Next year marks the 81st time the races will be held. Racers in their gravity-powered cars will come from all over to compete Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Derby Downs in Akron. The championships cap a week of festivities throughout Northeast Ohio.
