Super Kids Soap Box Derby brings smiles to children and parents - The Messenger

Sixteen "Super Kids" gathered Saturday at the Pennyrile Soap Box Derby track in Madisonville for a competition that affords one lucky winner the opportunity to compete nationally in Akron, Ohio.

In 2009, the Pennyrile Soap Box Derby race program began holding Super Kids races at their track by pairing experienced drivers with special needs children. The cars are modified to hold two children and even include a seat belt. The experienced driver controls the steering and brakes.''

Super Kids Chairman Linda Ramsey's grandson, Isaac, has Down syndrome. She said the Super Kids race gives children who might not otherwise have the opportunity a chance to shine.

"I wish there were more opportunities for special needs children," said Ramsey. "If we had some more events that were designed for them it would really be great for our community. It's wonderful to see these kids and how happy they are to race down the hill."

Eight-year-old Donald Stewart, of Princeton, is legally blind. His mother, Tiffany LaPradd, said it means a lot to her that Donald was able to race.

"There's not a lot he can do being legally blind," said LaPradd.

Despite his limited vision, Donald's enthusiasm is contagious.

"I thought it was so much fun," said Donald. "My driver was actually perfect. I think its because of him that we did so well."

Christopher Morgan, 10, of Dawson Springs, was the experienced driver paired with Donald. He said it feels good to bring joy to others and watch their excitement when a race is won. The pair won their heat. Donald went on to bring home fourth place in Saturday's competition.

"I can't really explain it, but I just feel like I'm not driving," Christopher said. "It's the super kids. They're driving. I'm just helping to make it happen."

Members of the Hopkins County Board of Realtors and several employees at Madisonville's General Electric Aviation plant volunteered at the Super Kids Soap Box Derby.
