Recycling Corner: Cleaner than soap? - Wicked Local

Everyone knows that Ivory Soap is 99 and 44/100 percent pure. But did you know that China expects shipments of recyclables to be 99 and 50/100 percent pure? As Ben Harvey, a leader in the waste and recycling industry, pointed out, “They expect our recyclables to be cleaner than soap!”

Harvey is talking about the Chinese “National Sword” standards that have turned the recycling industry upside down. (And you thought it was just your 401K that was taking a hit!) As commodity prices have plummeted, our recycling costs have skyrocketed.

In response, all residents and municipalities and haulers and processors are trying to clean up the curbside recycling stream. You can help.

• First of all, do not put plastic bags or “filmy” plastic of any kind in your blue cart.

• Recycle clean and dry food and beverage and personal care (e.g. shampoo) containers and cartons – metal, plastic, cardboard and glass.

• Recycle clean and dry paper – newspapers, magazines, bags, catalogs, junk mail, office paper, all colors.

• Recycle clean and dry and flattened cardboard and paperboard – shipping boxes, cereal boxes (Please, only the non-soiled parts of pizza boxes.)

Never put the following items in your blue bin:

Plastic bags and “filmy” plastic;

Food and liquid;

Garbage;

Clothing or linens;

“Tanglers” (hoses, wires, electronics, chains, tapes).
