He also likes them to show off hard working soldiers and workers who are devoted to him and their political party.
The leader of the rogue state is said to have radically overhauled programming on North Korean TV to reflect his unusual taste.
He made the changes since taking office in 2011 following the death of his father Kim Jong-Il, according to Jean Lee, a fellow at the Wilson centre in Washington.
And while the late Kim Jong-Il was a lover of films and spent millions of dollars buying them, his son is said to be completely hooked on soap operas.
Ms Lee said that Kim enjoys watching South Korean soaps.
She told The Sunday Times: “There is a very different focus with TV dramas being used to emphasise the importance of family and community.”
Yet, while the western version of a soap opera tends to feature romance or dramatic storylines, the soaps that Kim loves are pure propaganda, according to Ms Lee.
She claims the programmes aim to cultivate people’s loyalty to the Kim dynasty and to the party.
A typical soap opera will feature: Pyongyang’s elite communities, students and athletes who excel, members of the military who diligently carry out their roles and those bring praise to their nations.
She added: “While Kim Jong-Il’s propagandists sought to portray the people as orphans who should look up to Kim as their surrogate father… Kim Jong-un is portrayed as their friend and comrade.”
Kim has stoked international condemnation for launching a series of missile tests over the past year.
He has also traded insults with US president Donald Trump, in a war of words that is constantly threatening to endanger the international community.
