Arlington competes in Soap Box Derby race in Cambridge mall - Wicked Local Arlington

In the lower levels of the Cambridgeside Galleria kids from all over New England came together to race. After spending hours crafting their cars, Arlington's own Soap Box Derby team raced to place in the top five for Stock and Super Stock divisions and in the top three for Masters division.

Soap box cars use nothing but gravity to race downhill. Kids and their parents work from what are basically complicated LEGO instructions to build the cars, trying to make theirs the fastest.

The race at the Cambridgeside Galleria was the league's first indoor race, but there was still room for differences in slope for each lane.

It's all downhill

Wendy Barr, Arlington Soap Box Derby Communications Director, explained that each race is done two times. Because the races come down to a thousandth of a second in some cases, lane shape could make a huge difference.

To make the races fair, each rider races in both lanes and their scores are averaged together.

In addition to running each race twice, kids who participate are placed in random brackets to kick off the rally. In order to get eliminated, riders must lose twice in a row. This way, the random brackets don't eliminate the top kids right away.

"Even if you lose every race, you'll race four times," said Barr.
