The Athens Farmers’ Market has a wide range of products that are both good tasting and good for your health. But did you know that hidden among the mounds of kale and baskets of potatoes or onions, there is a product that is good for our largest organ? It might smell and look good enough to eat but the soap you’ll find at the market is for your skin. Patchouli, oatmeal, mint or lemon balm soaps can all be found at the market. What a great gift for Christmas and a perfect stocking stuffer.

From its early days in ancient Babylon to the ingredient dense antibacterial suds of today, soap has come in many forms. The kind you will find at the Athens Farmers’ Market is more like its ancient Babylonian ancestor. It is made from vegetable oils, lye, essential oils, plant powders, and goat milk. Vegetable oils and lye form the base of the of the soap, essential oils provide the wonderful scents, plant powders give the swirling colors, and the goat milk provides the moisturizing our skin needs. At the Athens Farmers’ market you can find locally-grown fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef, bread from scratch, and soap from milk.

This Athens Market Café is a collaboration between the Athens Farmers Market and local farmers and processors. Athens Farmers Market hours are Wednesdays (April-December) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Saturdays (year round) from 9 a.m. to noon at the Market on State parking lot, 1000 E. State St., Athens.

To help increase fresh food consumption the Athens Farmers Market vendors participate in the following social service programs. The USDA Food Assistance Program, SNAP/EBT (food stamps), WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participants can stop by the table at the Southeast corner of the market to get SNAP tokens to spend at the market.
