SOAP Squad brings important message to younger students - Cleburne Times-Review

Elementary-aged students around Huntsville enjoyed an extra treat recently as Huntsville High School’s SOAP Squad visited the elementary schools for Red Ribbon Week.

“SOAP Squad teaches elementary students to never do drugs or drink alcohol. It really impacts the kids by teaching them in funny ways, but still keeping the seriousness of the consequences in mind,” junior SOAP Squad member Jillian Casburn said.

During their visits to the elementary schools, SOAP Squad members emphasize their main purpose — Standing Out Against Problems — by performing interactive comedy skits for the students.

“The best part, by far, is watching the little kids cheer you on. It feels amazing, because you’ll look out into this sea of children and notice that they’re all chanting along with you, and you can’t help but smile. It is really one of the best feelings,” senior member Sydney Burum said.

For generations, the older students have been such role models to the kids, so most of the SOAP Squad members themselves joined SOAP Squad after being awed by it as children.

“When I was little, the people in SOAP Squad were like celebrities," Casburn said. "It was my favorite thing ever when they came to my school, so doing that for the other kids is fun and gives me a good feeling.”

To perfect their skits, SOAP Squad meets twice a week all year-round to practice and talk about how they want to guide the kids.

“My favorite thing about being on SOAP Squad is the other people associated with it. We all started out not knowing each other at all, but now every time we come together we laugh and always have a really good time,” Casburn said.

While it's entertaining and fun, SOAP Squad serves a very real purpose in helping curb the drug epidemic in America.

“We really just want to teach kids that there are other ways to have fun besides drugs and alcohol,” Burum said.
