Soap opera spoof play brings comedy to Aquin Catholic High School stage - Freeport Journal-Standard

FREEPORT — Following several years of heavy dramas, director Steve Hotchkiss said Freeport Aquin Catholic High School students approached him about doing a comedy for the fall play production. Hotchkiss listened and began the search for something different, and Friday the students will step onto the stage to present a soap opera spoof called “The Bold, The Young & The Murdered.”

Hotchkiss said while comedy is filled throughout this play, it becomes a murder mystery of a soap opera in the final days.

“The past few years have been serious plays, with serious topics, and I listened to the students, did my research, and I found this funny, light-hearted play that I hope will bring the audience to tears through laughter,” Hotchkiss said. “The kids are really into this play.”

With a cast of 18, the production has been working toward Friday’s opening night for the past two months. Hotchkiss said he has enjoyed watching the students have fun with this play.

“It’s hard to keep them from laughing as they get into the meaning behind their lines,” he added.

This is the story of a soap opera in its last days. There is a hunky hero with self-esteem issues, a villainous old man and the heroines are slightly psychopathic. In the plot of the play, the executive director gives the squabbling cast an ultimatum: complete an episode in one night or the show is canceled. The director ends up getting murdered, other cast members begin to drop like flies, and it becomes a story of a cast of misfits trying to find the murderer.

Kiersten Koch, a senior who has been a part of plays for many years on the Aquin High School stage, said this play has her laughing, wanting more from the story, even at the end.

“I get to play three different characters, which is something of a stretch from what I have done the past three years,” Koch said. “I love being part of a comedy, and we as a cast hope to make this play fun for the audience.”

Michael Giaimo, a sophomore, said the play doesn’t have a central message, but adds, “This is a play that will have the audience escape with the humor. It’s a show that anyone can have fun with, and we as a cast are having so much fun.”

“The Bold, The Young & The Murdered” will have performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students. Reservations can be made by calling 815-235-3154, ext. 224.
