Neighbors worry burned out soap factory will be an eyesore in east Dayton (WKEF/WRGT)

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT)- There are still large piles of brick blocking the sidewalk in front of the old Hewitt Soap Factory on Linden Ave. The smell of smoke still lingers in the air a week after a fire gutted part of the property.

The city of Dayton is in the process of nuisance abating the property. Once it does, the property owners will have 60 days to take care of the property.

Fox 45’s Christian Hauser talked with Robert Geer. He lives a block and a half from the Hewitt Soap Factory property. Geer says he has spent pretty much his whole life in the east Dayton area.

"I was surprised it got destroyed [to the extent] it was. I mean it got totally demolished," Geer said.

The buildings that are left have their trouble spots. You can see several large graffiti tags from the street.

Geer is hopeful the property can be redeveloped.

"I drive by there every day, several times a day. I'm glad to see them working on it and cleaning it up," Geer said.

But he says he is worried the property will sit in this condition for months or even years.

"If they're not going to take care of it, get rid of it. I didn't like seeing it [after it burned the first time], I don't like seeing vacant houses but it's the time we live in," Geer said.

He thinks the property could mean jobs for the neighborhood and jobs could mean people buying houses and bringing the neighborhood back.

"There's a lot of people wanting to start good businesses. There's a lot of good people here opening good businesses. So, there's hope," Geer said.

There is no timeline to get things cleaned up or for the future of the property.
