Area high Schools' soap drive collect thousands of bars of soap - Daily Ardmoreite

Dickson and Sulphur schools’ concurrent soap drive ended with Sulphur in the lead Friday night.
For the last three years, Dickson and Sulphur have competed to collect soap for the Samaritan’s Purse gift drive Operation Christmas Child, which sends shoeboxes of gifts and necessities to children in need worldwide every year. Samaritan’s Purse representative Dorris Row said the soap drive is a recent addition, but she’s been participating in Operation Christmas Child for about 18 years.
“Our goal is to have at least 500 boxes with soccer balls and pumps,” Row said. “We’ll probably put two bars of soap in every box, and any soap we have left, often, we’ll take to Dallas’ distribution center and add to boxes that don’t have any.”
Dickson student council chair Baylie Hughes, who has been running the soap drive since she was a freshman, said it was Sulphur High School’s student council sponsor, Janet Carter, who started the drive and reached out, asking if they could turn it into a joint
effort/ friendly competition. The drive soon expanded to include all grade levels and the community at large.
“My freshman year, I had a week to do it,” Hughes said. “We collected 1,000 that first week. I tried to make it a competition between the grades. We get a lot of donations from local businesses, some from Ardmore, and the fire department.”
The total number of bars collected was announced Friday night during halftime of the Dickson-Sulphur game. Dickson collected 1,290 bars of soap, while Sulphur collected 3,678 bars.
“I appreciate the town and everyone who gets involved,” Hughes said. “I hope next year we get more. I was a little disappointed this year, but we’ll make up for it next year.”
