It’ll be hard to wash this one away.
Personal hygiene brand Unilever had to clarify on Thursday that its new soap isn’t named after North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un.
The soap, a shower gel line called KJU, was created by a Korean designer and is aimed at urban millennials in China. The realization that the letters are also the initials of Kim Jong Un didn’t come until it was too late.
The line, with scents like “Romancy Rosy,” has been six months in the making.
Unilever released a brand of soap called "KJU" targeting the company's Chinese market. The soap, the company insists, was not named after Kim Jong Un. Here is one of their scents, Romancy Rosy.
(UNILEVER)“It was only after we trademarked it that I realized that it also stood for Kim Jong Un, but never mind,” Alan Jope, Unilever’s head of personal care, said at a Thursday meeting with investors according to Bloomberg.
Unilever, however, is going to have a hard time fighting for name recognition and branding. Googling “KJU” pulls up Kim Jong Un first and a search of “#KJU” on Twitter features stories about “Rocket Man” and his feud with President Trump.
Unilever has yet to explain what KJU was meant to represent, but here are some other things KJU stands for that aren’t the dictator of North Korea:
• Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, an organization of Muslim scholars formed in Kerala, India, in 1924
• Karaite Jewish University, an educational institution formed in California in 2005
• Kamiraba Airport in Papua New Guinea's airport code is KJU
• Le KJU Restaurant in Switzerland
Unilever has also recently acquired Carver Korea, a leading skincare business in North Asia, continuing its expansion in Asia.
