Belgrade man hosts 'soap box derby' to promote company - Belgrade News

Frank Gazella, Jr. said he always wore the same old college t-shirt while he was hiking. One day, he decided he would make his own, inspired by adventure in the Bridgers.

Creek to Peak Wear, a line of t-shirts and hats, hoodies and other gear, was born. The Belgrade man started the company last September.

Now, he’s expanding the brand’s presence to unique local events, too. Namely, the area’s first ever mountain soap box derby.

“How we want to brand ourselves is through events,” Gazella said. “We just don’t want to be your typical outerwear company.”

So, why a soap box derby? The gravity-driven, homemade vehicles call to mind ramshackle carts full of kids careening down streets.

Gazella said the adult soap box derby is just a fun, unique way to get the Creek to Peak name out there and bring people together. People are welcome to register as teams and are encouraged to decorate their vehicles to match a theme. Prizes will be given for the most creative, artistic ideas, as well as the fastest carts.

“In the brainstorming part of Creek to Peak, we were thinking about how to get our brand out there with all these other companies,” Gazella said. “The idea is to do these cool events. We’re not the first ones to do a soap box derby, but I don’t know of any other mountain soap box derbies.”

The event, to be held April 8 on Meyers Lane in Livingston, will be the start of an adult soap box series, Gazella hopes. He said he’d like to hold similar events in small communities all around Montana.

The first derby will coincide with the annual Tap Into Montana event, which will also occur in Livingston. Gazella said that will add to the excitement of the day. With a $250 team registration fee, each member gets free entry to the brewery event and a Creek to Peak derby t-shirt, “the most comfortable t-shirt they own,” Gazella added.

There will be live music, food trucks and beverages and special guest announcers for the derby, as well.

“We just want to make this first event a success,” Gazella said.

To top it all off, some of the proceeds from the derby will be donated to the Gallatin Valley Land Trust, in support of the public lands that first inspired Gazella to create Creek to Peak.

The owner said he plans to donate money from future events to various organizations at the end of each year through the Creek to Peak Foundation. The GVLT is the first of many future partners.

As his business grows, Gazella said he plans to keep expanding the line and spreading the brand throughout the state. Though Creek to Peak is a home-based business now, he said he’s opening a retail space on Bozeman’s Main Street this spring. It will be located inside Concept Design Studios, which has a hand in Creek to Peak’s printing process.

To register for the soap box derby, teams can sign up and pay through the Creek To Peak Adult Mountain Soap Box Derby Facebook page. The registration deadline is Feb. 22, but Gazella said he plans to extend it to March 1.
