Peggs' goat farm produces artful soaps, fizzies - Pryor Daily Times

“Who doesn’t love unicorns? And bubble baths?” This is the beginning description of just one of the homemade products you can find at Daisy Acres Farm in Peggs. The Unicorn Bubble Bath Cookies are a one-of-a-kind item, as are many of the other products, which look like little practical works of art.

Owner Cara Schwichtenberg has been making soap from the milk of the goats they raise for over 12 years. A former nurse, Schwichtenberg decided to work from home to raise her four daughters, and thus Daisy Acres Farm was born.

The art of her products aside, Schwichtenberg got interested in making soap because of the science.

“I enjoy the scientific component of taking simple fats or oils, lye and water or goat milk and turning it into a bar of soap. Different oil combinations influence the hardness of the soap, lather stability, moisturizing factor, and amount of bubbles in general. I like to use goat milk because its natural sugars boost the bubble factor.”

The milk comes from the family’s herd of goats.

“The girls give us delicious, rich and creamy milk,” Schwichtenberg said of the goats. “In return we provide them with grassy pasture to wander, the best feed and plenty of loving care.”

The goats aren’t the only ones in the limelight though, as the farm also produces egg yolk soaps from eggs collected from free range hens. Another popular product is Llama Spit lip balm, though the title may be a bit misleading, as the farm’s llamas don’t actually contribute to the product.

The Daisy Acres Farm soaps and other products are unique, Schwichtenberg feels, because she is “more concerned with quality over profit.”

“I would rather pay more for ingredients that reduce the chance of my products causing skin irritation, cancer risk, or allergic reaction. I truly care that my products are as gentle and natural as possible with ingredients that are as easily identifiable by consumers as possible,” said Schwichtenberg.

The process of learning how to make just the right soap did take some time, as Schwichtenberg experimented with hard oils like lard, tallow and cocoa butter and soft oils like avocado oil, rice bran and olive.

“A good bar of soap balances both types for bar longevity and silky, stable lather,” said Schwichtenberg. “Originally, I did use lard and beef tallow in my soaps, but as I have educated myself about factory farming, I no longer care to use these ingredients and use plant oils and nut butters exclusively.”

Daisy Acres Farm soaps are also environmentally-friendly with minimal packaging.

“These products are tested only on our family and because one of my lovely daughters is affected by autism you may be assured that I care deeply about the safety and origins of the ingredients I use,” said Schwichtenberg.

Daisy Acres Farm soaps and bath treats, such as bubble bath cupcakes, fizzies and cookies, can be found at the farm’s online store at daisyacresfarm.com and also at Unique Vintiques in Tahlequah.
