Menands company looks to be a 'radical' force in unique soaps - WNYT

Now seven years later, Rad Soap Co. creates unique soaps, lotions, body scrubs and other products using a top secret scientific process and natural ingredients.

"I was a mother that wanted to do things naturally I always turned to herbs and oils and things like that," explained Sue Kerber, the co-founder of Rad Soap Co.

When nothing seemed to relieve Sue Kerber's son's eczema, Kerber began experimenting. She found that hemp was the only thing relieving his irritation. So she created her own lotion.

"I couldn't do a lot of the things I wanted to do in high school cause it was just all over my body it was embarrassing," recalled Zak Kerber.

Sue began sharing her concoctions with other parents relieving different ailments like headaches, arthritis and sleeplessness using only natural products, created in the garage of her Cohoes home.

"We used to just put stoves in our oven. We used to do four pots at a time which would be usual around 48 bars of soap," noted Max Kerber.

Fast forward seven years and Rad Soap Co. produced 100,000 bars of soap in 2016. A machine dubbed the "Megatron," pumps out 400 containers of lotion an hour. Every product is hand made by the Rad family.

"We have created a process where our essential oil when dunked into soap is never effected so you're going to get a smelly bar amazing smells coming through your bar of soap every time you shower," pointed out Max Kerber.

The company has even created a way to pump out soaps faster than a traditional manufacturer which will take anywhere from eight hours to six weeks. Here it's ready in 15 minutes.

"Every time I think of how far we've come. It's amazing," beamed Sue Kerber.

You can find Rad Soap Co. at their Stuyvesant Plaza flagship store.

They have plans to create a Rad hair care and beauty line in addition to towels with poetry on them written by Lexi, Sue’s daughter. Proceeds from that will help fund Down syndrome research.
