LINCOLNTON, GA (WFXG) -

Drivers ignoring roadblocks and heading straight into a construction zone. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, it's a huge problem in Lincolnton. That's where crews are rebuilding the Soap Creek bridge. However, drivers don't seem to care about the caution signs.

"I know it's been an adjustment for folks. But we've just had folks basically just trying to drive into the project,” said Kyle Collins with GDOT.

Construction crews are reporting vehicles going around the road closure signs and heading straight into construction. GDOT says there are even reports of people moving cones and barricades and to get through.

Collins explained, "It's a huge danger to not only you and your passengers, but GDOT personnel, contract personnel. You've got heavy equipment moving through there."

So far, no workers have been hurt. But these signs are no joke and GDOT hopes drivers will keep the area safe for construction crews.

"You're going to start seeing several miles ahead signage and message boards telling you that there's a detour ahead. So, you have to pay attention and be alert that there's a different route you'll need to take to get through the area,” Collins said.

The project is expected to wrap up in July of 2017. So for now, GDOT is asking drivers to be patient.

The detour for the bridge rebuild includes State Road 220, Chamberlain South Ferry Road, State Road 47, and the State Road 43 Connector.
