Havre woman turns passion to profits with online soap company - KULR-TV

HAVRE, Mont. -

Amber Wells and Lincoln Holt run The Crate Soapery out of their northern Montana home.

Their variety of soaps, bath bombs and lotion bars are all handmade and home-sourced. For example, their beeswax is from Chinook.

"We do everything from scratch, even with the lye," Wells said.

They're also expanding to Etsy, an online marketplace, and they're not alone.

Search "Montana" on Etsy and you'll find thousands of shops across the Treasure State, selling soap, jewelry and everything in between.

"We are the most creative state I've ever lived in," Wells said.

Montana's population is around one million people, but with Etsy, these small business owners reach over 27 million shoppers around the world.

With Etsy, "My reach isn't just Havre," Wells said. "My reach is global now."

She may ship her soaps as far as Louisiana, but Amber says small business owners are raising the bar for Montana.

"If you choose to do the shopping small, you're benefiting a family instead of a corporation," she said. "And I think that's really, really cool."

Etsy does take a small portion of the seller's profits, but Amber says it's minimal, and she'd recommend using the website to anyone.
