MADISONVILLE, Ky. (10/15/16) – Pennyrile Soap Box Derby Super Kids Races took place Friday at Baldwin Track in Madisonville.
Pennyrile Soap Box board member Alisha Terry said 11 Super Kids participated in a single elimination race, and then in a fun-run race just to get them some extra time on the track.
Pennyrile Soap Box Derby president and race director Bill Farrell built the cars used in the Super Kid races and said each car is constructed to accommodate a rider and a driver, and also equipped with a seat belt for those who need assistance sitting up.
Geoffrey Bailey took first place and second went to Calla Lane. The winner will have the opportunity to compete at the National Super Kids Race in July in Akron, Ohio.
Farrell said there are usually about 75-80 Super Kids from all over the country that compete each year at the nationals.
He said every year, they usually send a local winner to Akron. Four years ago, Courtney Conrad, the local winner placed sixth in the world.
All cars have sponsors including Hopkins County Home Builders Association, Armstrong Coal and two Hopkinsville sponsors, said Terry.
Hopkins County Realtors volunteered time to help with the race.
The annual Pumpkin Roll Soap Box Derby Rally Races will be Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16 on Baldwin Drive, off Nebo Road, Madisonville.
