EDITOR: Well, summer is winding down. How do I know? I just finished cleaning the outside grill. I’d been dreading the task. Every time I saw it as I walked by or drove out the driveway, there it was; that dirty, greasy monster waiting to be scrubbed. Out children bought the grill for us as they thought we needed one, so we graciously accepted it, but never used it for ourselves; only when we hosted picnics. My husband had been the one to use it, not because he wanted to or liked to cook, but I do the cooking inside and at my age was not going to start grilling outside. I think we had only used it three or four times this summer, but today was the day to clean it up and put the grill away for the winter.
It took me about an hour-plus to clean and scrub off the grease and dirt before I was satisfied. Of course, I then had to clean up myself; my apron had telltale signs of black grease as well as my shoes and hands. Of course I didn’t put rubber gloves on before I started; that never entered my mind. I wasn’t careful while scrubbing with the wire brush, so my shoes and apron were the results of my carelessness. Now as I scrubbed my hands with soap and a scrub brush I realized they weren’t coming clean. That black grease had penetrated into my knuckles, and under my fingernails and would not come clean. So I grab my Clorox to bleach out the dirt under my nails to no avail. Now what to do? Then I had a great idea. Get that old bar of Fels-Naphtha soap out of the cupboard, and see if that would work; that’s known for getting rid of stains. So with a scrub brush, Fels-Naphtha soap and a little elbow grease, once again the grit under my nails and in the creases of my knuckles was gone.
Sort of reminds me that life is like that. I let some black thoughts of sin and messy, dirty issues creep into my mind and heart, and before you know it, I need some cleaning up. A quick trip to my Bible where I read this scripture in Psalm 51: 1-2 — “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” Wow, what a promise! Just as I washed my hands with good ol’ Fels-Naphtha soap and got rid of the grease and dirt, so too I can go to my Heavenly Father and ask for forgiveness and He will wash away all the black, dirty sin from my heart. Asking God to cleanse me from sin and praying for forgiveness will change my heart and give me a new love of life. God’s solution for sin is His forgiveness and that is a tried and true way that works every time. The old remedies are the best and are proven to get the job done in a hurry. Prayer and Bible readings are both great remedies for cleaning up one’s life; just like Fels-Naphtha soap did for my hands. It feels good knowing that the grill is clean, my hands are clean and I’ve asked God to clean up my life. I guess I’m ready to have that cup of coffee, a couple of cookies, sit back and enjoy the view from my kitchen table.
