I have never been big on doing laundry. In fact, I used to pay my sister to do my laundry when I was younger. It’s not the washing that bothers me, it’s the folding and putting it away.
Recently, I have began to embrace a clean laundry room (even if it only lasts a day), so I’ve been more diligent about doing laundry every couple of days.
To save money, I decided to make my own laundry soap. There are many recipes for homemade laundry soap, but this is my favorite. It smells good and works great.
You will need:
One large container for storing your soap. (I bought a big glass jar at Wal-Mart in the kitchen area.)
One box of Borax
One box of Biz
One large box of baking soda, 4 pounds
One box of washing soda
Two boxes of grated Zote soap
One large bottle of Purex crystals or Gain fabric beads
All of the ingredients have a purpose and some overlap. The zote soap is the detergent that will clean your clothes. It generates low suds and eliminates additional rinsing.
Baking soda helps boost the detergent’s cleaning power. Another excellent quality of baking soda is that it balances the pH of the water. This helps the detergent work more effectively by breaking down odor-causing bacteria leaving our clothes fresher. It is also great here in the Fort Hood area because it softens our hard water. This allows our clothes to rinse better.
Washing soda is different in molecular structure than baking soda. It has a higher pH level. It is also a water softener and helps laundry detergents lather more effectively. This, in turn, helps the detergent get the dirt and grime out of our clothes.
The borax enhances the cleaning power of the zote laundry soap. It softens the water and helps reduce damage to clothing. With a high pH, your clothes will look dingy and worn.
Biz is a good product that works on fabrics labeled “no bleach.” It’s made of different enzymes that help destroy stains. It also helps get out ground-in stains. If you have a bad stain, you can even apply this directly to the stain or soak it with Biz in hot water over night.
The Purex crystals add fragrance to the clothing and help them come out smelling fresh.
The detergent is simple to make, just mix all the ingredients together. I use a plastic bag to mix them in and dump the mixture into a glass jar. I use ¼ cup per load. This soap is super concentrated, so a little goes a long way. One batch lasts my family about six months, and I do five to six loads each week. I do have a HE washer and I use this in it, but you should do your own research to make sure this detergent will work with your machine. For a grand total of $30.13, I think this is a good laundry soap. Until next time, happy laundering.
