EastEnders spoilers: Roxy Mitchell actress teases RETURN to soap - 'I'm home' - Express.co.uk

Roxy was an EastEnders fan favourite before her untimely demise in the BBC soap last year. 

The blonde bombshell died on New Year’s Day along with sister Ronnie (Samantha Womack) in a tragic drowning accident. 

However, viewers were given a sliver of hope for a comeback after Rita revealed she had been filming in east London.

The 40-year-old actress posted a snap of an East End wall on Twitter, captioned: “East London. Filming. I’ll let you know soon! #I’mHome.”

Her announcement appeared to delight fans of the soap who excitedly replied to the photo.

One simply questioned: “EastEnders?”

However, some were hoping that she would be making a spin-off show alongside her sister.

One theorised: “Its for a Netflix series, The Adventures Of R&R, following Ronnie & Roxy after faking their deaths.”(sic)

A third added: “Omg r u returning to EastEnders pleeeaaasseee or R&R.”(sic)

A spin-off is not a surprising leap to make, considering the Redwater series that followed Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie (Shane Richie) after they left Albert Square behind for Ireland.

However, today saw Rita confirm the real reason behind her image as she posted a follow-up tweet.

She wrote: “Delighted to finally tell you I have just finished filming this. @KraysMovie #DeadManWalking #Krays.”

While Rita won’t be coming back to Walford, she will be starring as Lisa Prescott in new gangland film The Krays - Dead Man Walking. 

Although some fans may be disappointed to hear the real reason why Rita returned to her old haunt, many were quick to wish her well on her new venture.

One wrote: “Looking forward to seeing it xxx.”

While another exclaimed: “Can't wait to see it! Xx.”

Rita will be joined by another ex-EastEnder on the film, as Leslie Grantham, who played Dirty Den Watts in EastEnders, is also part of the cast.

EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm on BBC One.
