Coronation Street spoilers: Soap to portray disturbing male rape plot in show FIRST - Express.co.uk

Father-of-two and hairdresser David Platt (played by Jack P. Shepherd) has had his fair share of tragedy and bad luck in relationships over the last year, not least of which the death of his wife Kylie Platt (Paula Lane), but now the ITV soap has reportedly chosen to take the character in a horrifying new direction.

Residents on the cobbles look set to be faced with a whirlwind as charming newcomer and mechanic Josh swoops in to change their lives for good, but all will not be as it seems.

Also a personal trainer, the character’s initial business will reportedly be to strive to get his new neighbours ready for a charity boxing match, leading to huge popularity with the locals.

When a drunken night out ends with traumatic scenes of David waking up in Josh’s bed however, the rapist’s true colours come to light.

Producers are said to be keen to showcase the aftermath of such a distressing violation rather than subjecting viewers to the gratuity of the event itself, and will hone in on David’s attempts to cope with what’s happened.

"There won’t be any sexually explicit scenes, what has happened to David will be implied by his reaction and behaviour when he wakes up the next day and starts to remember some of what happened,” a source told The Mirror.

The insider continued: “With Josh still on the street, David struggles to deal with the shame of what has happened to him. This is a big storyline for Jack and everyone is determined to get it right.”

The soap will also continue to focus the spotlight on the unravelling of killer Pat Phelan’s (Connor McIntyre) sickening actions in the lead up to Christmas, but David’s ordeal will come to the forefront in upcoming January episodes.

In Coronation Street’s iconic 57-year-history, the storyline will be a landmark moment for cast, crew and viewers alike.

Bosses have developed a close working-relationship with charity Survivors Manchester according to reports, in a bid to ensure a true and sensitive depiction of the issue.

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV
