The Bears are like a bad soap opera - ChicagoNow (blog)

We've seen this episode before.

A close game where the Bears are trailing and try to rally back.

But then they choke. This week it came on a shanked Connor Barth 46-yard field goal that went so wide left it almost went into the tunnel where the players come out of. The Lions clipped the Bears 27-24 in the process.

Note: Barth was replaced on Monday by 25-year-old Cairo Santos, the team announced. So Barth leaves after 26 games with the team, making 29-of-39 tries in two seasons and just 6-of-11 from 40 or more yards out. This is the same guy the Bears replaced longtime star kicker Robbie Gould with. A bad judgment call by the organization.

Regardless, this Bears team is bad because they are predictable. They show flashes of really solid football evident by the 17-7 lead early in the second quarter.

But then a mixture of bad coaching and heartbreaking injuries always seem to hamper them.

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains tends to take too long to open up the offense and he mixes and matches with the wrong players.

Rookies Tarik Cohen and Adam Shaheen weren't on the field on the final drive of the game. Dontrelle Inman was, but not for every snap.

Mitch Trubisky is a star in the making as he continues to get better each and every week, that scramble on 4th and 13 in crunch time was Michael Vick like. It showed just how dangerous he can be with his legs and that is something the Bears need to use him for more often with the zone read.

The offensive line was healthy and blocked really well for Trubisky and Jordan Howard. Quite frankly this offense is a few wide receivers and a better offensive coordinator away from being pretty solid. Inman, Cameron Meredith, Kendall Wright and a surefire No. 1 option would be a vast improvement over what they have now.

The defense suffered an ugly injury when Kyle Fuller went head first into Leonard Floyd's knee. Floyd was carted off and it appeared it was an ACL injury. Nothing has been reported yet, but head coach John Fox said it was pretty serious.

Vic Fangio's status with the team is cloudy despite his success over the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator. He's had to work with an underwhelmed unit that has seen its fair share of injuries.

That side of the ball needs two more reliable pass rushers, a true No. 1 cornerback and perhaps another inside linebacker. Health has been the issue more than anything.

Firing Fox would help tremendously as the Bears clearly need a young face running the sidelines. Just like general manager Ryan Pace, who is young and talented, the Bears should have that in the coaching aspect of the team.

Fox is 3-13 against the NFC North since taking over in 2015 and has just one win in nine games against Detroit.

Enough is enough with this show, we continue to watch the same episode over and over. For Bears fans and NFL fans alike, it is brutal.

The problems are fixable. Another good draft selection will help the cause and a couple of additions via free agency will patch things up. The Bears are not that far off. We have seen glimpses this season.
