Old Hewitt Soap Factory catches fire again in Dayton (WKEF/WRGT)

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - For the second time in less than a year, firefighters battled a massive industrial fire at the old Hewitt Soap Factory in Dayton.

Flames broke out just after 6:00 a.m. Friday at the factory on Linden Avenue and Chief Jeff Payne said it spread quickly. As flames continued to burn, some of the walls of the old factory collapsed.

Just after 7:30 a.m., Payne said the fire was mostly out, but crews would be staying around for a while to make sure all of the hot spots are out. Payne said the way the building was built and its age factored in to the intensity of the fire, "they had soap products and that residue and the materials, it's just going to cause stuff to burn that much faster." No one was hurt in the fire.

The soap factory caught fire on December 22 in 2016 and that time it took firefighters 11 hours to put the flames out. Debris from that fire was left behind for months before cleanup started. Payne said this time around, there is "significant collapse potential" from this fire. Payne said he's already been in contact with the Dayton City Manager that crews should be brought in to knock down the walls.

People from across the Miami Valley have been sending in photos because the smoke from the fire could be seen as far away as Kettering and Miamisburg.

Right now investigators are working to determine what caused the factory to catch fire again. Linden Avenue is closed at this time while crews remain on scene.
