Soap Opera Actor Who Slapped Reporter in the Face May "Seek Professional Help" - PEOPLE.com

Eduardo Yáñez, the soap opera star who aggressively hit a Univision reporter in the middle of an on-camera interview, apologized publicly last week on the Spanish-language Univision program El Gordo y La Flaca.

The Mexican actor apologized for the incident, which occurred on the red carpet of an event earlier this month in Los Angeles. The mercurial soap opera star, however, emphasized that his apology was meant for the public, not the reporter who probed him about his fraught relationship with his son.

“The truth is that I lost it and I want to ask the public for an apology,” he said.

The show’s hosts, Lili Estefan and Raul de Molina, asked Yáñez why he reacted so violently to their co-worker and fellow reporter Paco Fuentes.

“Paco involved himself in a matter that is very personal for me; it is a very sensitive topic. It [was] to defend my family,” Yanez explained. Fuentes asked Yáñez about his strained relationship with his son Eduardo Jr., who recently described his father as “a drug addict, racist [who] abuses women.” (In response to his son’s allegations, Yáñez has reportedly said: “I’ve never been a parent who has felt right giving advice. My life has not been an example to [to live by] for anyone.”)

In his interview with El Gordo y La Flaca, Yáñez added: “I believed in that moment that he insisted too much… I saw it to the point that he was mocking my situation, and I couldn’t stand it.”

Although Yáñez felt the reporter’s questions were inappropriate and invasive, he takes responsibility for his poor conduct.

When asked what he plans to do now, he said: “I have to go away for a while now. I have to go to my country [Mexico], with people who love me, with people who know me well and think about myself, about this, maybe seek professional help, and then start over because I am a human being who makes mistakes and because I am also a child of God.”

Yáñez also recently shared a reflective post dedicated to his family: “FAMILY, today I am standing stronger than ever thanks to you and [I am] determined not to let violence be a protagonist among us.”
