PLAINVIEW, TX (KCBD) -
There are only 18 shopping days left before Christmas, and one Plainview organization hopes that will lead shoppers to their homemade soaps.
These goat's milk soap bars have a reputation to not only leave the body, but your soul, feeling refreshed…because of the workers who make the product.
It all started as a partnership this fall between the Central Plains Center Intellectual Developmental Disability Program and the Wayland Baptist University Enactus team.
"I thought it would be really neat if there was a way for Wayland Baptist University Enactus team to partner with them to start some kind of a business," School of Business Dean Barry Evans said.
Adults with special needs are trained by the students, and given the opportunity to make soap and get paid for the job. The students, in turn, learn valuable business skills.
IDD director, Brenda Garcia, hopes the community will keep them in business because of the way it has helped their clients.
"They say, 'I made this' and it's a bar of soap," she said, "and they have so much pride in what they make."
If more soap orders are placed, Garcia hopes these roles can expand to their 30 other adults who could use the jobs.
"So that they can live life and be secure within their own selves and that's what we want to do with all the individuals here.
