Authorities believe a man found unresponsive and later declared dead at Wright-Patterson on Tuesday climbed over a fence to gain entry after a single vehicle crash near the base, according to a Wright-Patterson spokesman.

The man was identified as Montrey Smith, 32, of Dayton. He was found unresponsive and partially clothed near Taxiway A in Area A near the 445th Airlift Wing about 9:11 a.m. and later declared dead at Wright-Patterson Medical Center after attempts to revive him failed, according to the base authorities.

In an email in response a question of whether the base was treating the incident as a security breach, Mayer wrote: ‘The investigation is looking at all circumstances of this incident. The preliminary results indicate he climbed the perimeter fence. While he crossed the first level of security, he did not breach or even approach any resource secured areas on the base. As a matter of policy, we do not discuss security procedures or processes on the base.”

The man apparently became disoriented after a single-car accident on southbound Ohio 4 near the base Monday night, according to a statement from Wright-Patterson spokesman Daryl Mayer.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol received a call about the crash near the border of Greene and Montgomery counties at 10:13 p.m. Monday night, according to Lt. Douglas Eck, commander of the Xenia post. Troopers found an overturned 2001 Kia Sportage sport utility vehicle. The driver was missing when troopers arrived, he said.

“We don’t have any kind of information at this point as to what caused him to lose control,” Eck said. “That’s something we hope to find out during the course of our investigation.”

The Highway Patrol continued to investigate Thursday whether the man found on base was the driver of the vehicle, Eck said.

Mayer said a witness told authorities the man appeared disoriented after the crash. A canine team later tracked the man’s path and found part of his clothing on top of barbed wire on the perimeter fence he had climbed in a remote area near the Mad River, Mayer said.

“He wasn’t discovered until the next morning,” Mayer said.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office was conducting an autopsy late Thursday. The cause of death was not immediately available.

An Air Force Office of Special Investigation probe into the incident was ongoing Thursday, Mayer said.
