CORONATION Street has come out on top with 18 nominations for the Inside Soap Awards despite two shocking race scandals in recent weeks.

The ITV soap is currently being investigated by Ofcom over a racist comment made about Kunta Kinte and Mark Anwar was sacked from the soap this week after making racist remarks about Indian people on Twitter.

However, the news comes after Mark Anwar was sacked from the show over his racist tweets

And Ofcom are investigating comments made by Cath Tyldesley’s character Eva Price who said she had ‘more roots than Kunta Kinte’

However, it hasn’t affected their nominations as they have one more that Emmerdale with 17 and four more than their biggest rival EastEnders who nabbed 14.

All four with battle it out for the top gong of Best Soap while the Best Actor and Best Actress categories are as hotly contested as ever.

Corrie stars Paula Lane (Kylie Platt) and Tina O’Brien (Sarah Platt) are up against EastEnders actress Lacey Turner (Stacey Fowler) and Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas Dingle in Emmerdale for the coveted prize.

Elsewhere, EastEnders boys Danny Dyer (Mick Carter) and Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell) are pitted against Coronation Street’s Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt) and Emmerdale star Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle) for the Beast Actor award.

Former X Factor star Shayne Ward is up for two awards, but faces competition for Best Newcomer from his Corrie co-star Liam Bairstow (Alex Warner), Hollyoaks actor Richard Linnell (Alfie Nightingale) and Emmerdale actress Isobel Steele (Liv Flaherty).

He’ll also go up against Danny Dyer, Hollyoaks Charlie Clapham (Freddie Roscoe) and Emmerdale’s Michael Parr (Ross Barton) for Sexiest Male.

Shayne has had great success this year having nabbed Best Newcomer at the TV Choice Awards and the National Television Awards earlier this year.

Last year's Sexiest Female Jennifer Metcalfe - who plays Mercedes McQueen in Hollyoaks - will contest the category again alongside EastEnders star Jacqueline Jossa (Lauren Branning), Gemma Atkinson (Carly Hope) from Emmerdale and Coronation Street's Kym Marsh (Michelle McDonald).

The annual ceremony, sponsored by Dream Bingo, takes place on October 3 at London's Hippodrome Casino.

Voting in the Best Soap category will remain open until midday of the ceremony on Inside Soap's website, but voting in all other categories has closed.
